The Archaeological Museum of Kos contains all the findings that came to light during the excavations carried out on the island from the beginning of the century until today, mainly from the archaeological sites of the Agora and the Western archaeological site, as well as from individual monuments such as Altar of Dionysus, the Conservatory and the Roman House (Casa Romana). The exhibition of sculptures that operates today at the Museum brings together works dating from the Hellenistic to the Late Roman years and aims to present to the general public the most important works of sculpture from Kos.   (More...)

 

  •  Asklepieion at Kos

In the peaceful hinterland of Epidaurus, with its mild climate and abundant mineral springs, is the sanctuary of the god-physician Asklepios, the most famous healing centre of the Greek and Roman world. The sanctuary belonged to the small coastal town of Epidaurus, but its fame and recognition quickly spread beyond the limits of the Argolid. It is considered the birthplace of medicine and is thought to have had more than two hundred dependent spas in the eastern Mediterranean. Its monuments, true masterpieces of ancient Greek art, are a precious testimony to the practice of medicine in antiquity. Indeed they illustrate the development of medicine from the time when healing depended solely on the god until systematic description of cases and the gradual accumulation of knowledge and experience turned it into a science.    (More...)

Kos or Cos is a Greek island, part of the Dodecanese island chain in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese by area, after Rhodes and Karpathos; it has a population of 33,388 (2011 census), making it the second most populous of the Dodecanese, after Rhodes. The island measures 40 by 8 kilometres (25 by 5 miles). Administratively, Kos constitutes a municipality within the Kos regional unit, which is part of the South Aegean region.
